Liebesspiel translates to "mating ritual" in German and is sometimes used to reference the nuptial dance between mates. Within the presence of certain females, male spermatophores are deposited onto the pond bottom. From there the female squats and removes the sperm mass with her duct. Females sometimes pick up multiple sperm masses which can lead to multiple paternity
